It's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for. :-)
When I started my current job I had over ten years of experience and was the only EA here with any experience at all. I was not hired by the CEO but a lot of people think they can climb the corporate ladder by jumping to a higher executive. It's the same job, just different people.
My advice to OP is to do your current job really well, keep your nose down and your opinions about others to yourself and let your work speak for itself.
Amber Leenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1578358125212393436.post-40692983135398203012013-10-28T12:01:49.387-07:002013-10-28T12:01:49.387-07:00Dear Ana - It's great to hear your input! I was mentored by a fantastic EA in my last job who is in her late 50s and had seen it all, and she was priceless. Always, always value length of experience - it tends to get trashed nowadays but it shouldn't, and don't underestimate people older than you either. Get the best from them! There must be a good reason why the more experienced candidate is in the running - don't dismiss someone as 'sweet' and good for coffee. She wouldn't have survived several personnel changes and recessions (I'm assuming?) without at least a good dose of cunning. Good luck with your career but try and dial down the aggression a bit? After all, one day someone may be doing the same to you! She has been at her organization 2 years and she makes assumptions that the other Executive Admin does not know Microsoft, does not anticipate her boss’ needs, is not a forward thinker, isn’t efficient and isn’t effective. I highly doubt the other admin has lasted over 30 years with no skills besides being able to keep a calendar and make a good cup of coffee. And to top it all off, she just assumes the other admin will be “terminated” before the new boss has even started.

While the writer may be skilled in Microsoft and have good administrative practices, she is woefully lacking in professionalism. Apparently her own boss is quite willing to let her go on to another position. There has to be a reason for that.

I suggest that she simply continue to do an excellent job at her own position. Believe me, the cream will rise to the top and management will definitely take notice. She does need to understand that management looks highly on those admins who understand teamwork and have a good attitude and are cooperative. This may be why the other admin has been there for over 30 years.

L.A.Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06219033225782282962noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1578358125212393436.post-72092737731888719432013-09-17T14:50:13.295-07:002013-09-17T14:50:13.295-07:00I got an additional comment from a reader saying t...I got an additional comment from a reader saying that they wished for their comment to NOT be visible, but were REALLY REALLY pleased with how I answered this post in general and gave advice. This is why I urge you to tread carefully with others. In life and in the business world, who is right or wrong is hard to define. There are a lot of things about play - how long you’ve been at company, who champions your career, your rank/title/seniority, who you interact with, what people value, etc. I’ve mentioned this before, but people would rather work for someone they like that is incompetent versus someone that is amazing at their job, but they don’t like. I know, it’s not very fair and doesn’t make a lot of business sense, but that’s how human nature works…"

Excellent!

Good luck to the poster!

EAGeeknoreply@blogger.com
